Our School
Y11 & Careers Advice
Students in Y11 are supported more intensively in deciding on their next steps after Fir Vale School. All Post 16 providers from Sheffield and the surrounding areas are invited to our annual “Aspirations and Destinations” event. Our Y11s all have the opportunity to speak with the different providers and find out more about the different routes available to them. We usually host about 30 different providers and parents / carers are invited to attend alongside their children.
Our students use “Sheffield Progress” to apply for their next destination. They have time to work on their applications and personal statements in Tutor Time and Ethics lessons, where they also get further information about different qualifications, entry requirements and open days. This year we will offer transport to selected 6th Form Open Events and all students will have the opportunity to visit Longley Park 6th Form. We also deliver sessions related to vocational pathways and apprenticeships.
We also have a bespoke careers library based in our Learning Resource Centre whereby students can access a range of careers related reading materials as well as a range of Post 16 and University prospectuses.
We employ our own qualified independent careers advisor, D Haimeed. All Y11 students benefit from a 1:1 appointment with Ms Haimeed who creates individual action plans for each of our students. Students, alongside, this may be invited to targeted small group sessions to support them with apprenticeship or 6th Form applications. Ms Haimeed also supports in class with the completion of Sheffield Progress applications and we offer after school drop in clinics to further support our students.
At the end of Y11 we support our students to sign up to the NCS (National Citizenship Service) which encourages our students to use the time between Y11 and starting their new course positively. They will meet new people, take on new challenges, show off their creative skills and make a positive difference in our community.
